Hail to Nails

In the Gospel of John, the resurrection happens early on Sunday morning when Mary Magdalene goes to Jesus’ tomb and finds the stone rolled away and the body gone (John 20:1–2). Alarmed, she runs to tell Peter and “the other disciple” (John 20:2). They both race to the tomb, see the linen wrappings lying there, and believe (John 20:3–8). Later, Mary stays behind weeping; Jesus appears to her outside the tomb, though she doesn’t recognize Him at first. When He calls her by name, she realizes it’s Jesus and clings to Him (John 20:11–18). That evening, Jesus appears to the disciples behind locked doors, shows them His hands and side, and breathes the Holy Spirit on them, commissioning them to continue His work (John 20:19–23). Through these appearances, John shows that Jesus truly rose, that He brings peace and new life, and that He empowers His followers by His Spirit.
